What is an air handling unit?

An air handling unit (AHU) is a large central unit that filters, heats, cools and moves air through a building's ductwork, often with heat recovery. AHUs serve offices, schools, hospitals and retail units and need regular filter changes, belt or motor checks, coil cleaning and damper and control checks.

In the UK, expect around £245–£595 per unit, per visit, plus VAT. A typical job (AHU service with filter change) is £245–£595 plus VAT.

An AHU is the lungs of a building. When filters clog, belts slip or coils foul, air flow drops, energy use rises and occupants notice stale air and poor temperatures.

We service AHUs on a planned basis, carry out repairs and fan upgrades, and replace units at the end of their life — including the craneage, ductwork connections and controls that a replacement involves.

Things to plan for

Filters

Filter grades should match the original design or current guidance for the building.

Energy

Fan upgrades and better controls can cut energy use significantly on older units.

Replacement logistics

Large AHU replacements need craneage, road closures and careful programming.

Hygiene

Drip trays and coils must be kept clean to avoid biological growth.

Questions about air handling units

How often should an AHU be serviced?

Typically every three to six months, depending on use and filter loading.

How long do air handling units last?

Commonly 20 years or more with good maintenance, though fans and controls may need replacing sooner.

Can you upgrade old AHU fans?

Yes. EC fan upgrades are a common way to cut energy use without replacing the whole unit.

Do you handle crane lifts?

Yes, we plan craneage, permits and lifting for replacements.
