What is commercial ventilation?
Commercial ventilation brings outdoor air into a building and removes stale air, using fans and ductwork to supply and extract air at the rates needed for the number of people and the activity. It is separate from air conditioning, which heats and cools air but does not on its own provide fresh air.
Our guide range in the UK is £2,950–£24,500 per system before VAT; a typical job (supply and extract for a 150 m² office) is £6,950–£16,500 plus VAT.
Air conditioning makes a room comfortable; ventilation makes it healthy. Without fresh air, CO2 levels climb in busy rooms, people feel drowsy and odours linger — even when the temperature is perfect.
We design supply and extract systems to the fresh-air rates set out in building regulations guidance and CIBSE design guides, and coordinate them with the air conditioning so the two systems work together rather than against each other.

How the work is carried out
Assess
We work out how many people use each space and the fresh-air rate needed.
Design
Fan, duct and grille sizes are designed for air flow, noise and energy use.
Install
Ductwork and fans are installed and connected to controls.
Balance
Air flows are measured and balanced to the design.

Things to plan for
Building Regulations
New or altered ventilation must meet the building regulations for the nation: Approved Document F in England and in Wales, Section 3 of the building standards in Scotland and Technical Booklet K in Northern Ireland. Monitoring CO2 is now recommended in many occupied spaces.
Heat recovery
Bringing in cold air in winter costs energy. Heat recovery units reclaim much of it.
Noise
Fans and grilles are selected and attenuated to keep noise down.
Fire
Ducts passing through fire-rated walls or floors need fire dampers.
Questions about commercial ventilation
Does air conditioning provide fresh air?
No. Most air conditioning recirculates room air. Fresh air needs a ventilation system or openable windows.
How much fresh air does an office need?
Guidance for offices is typically around 10 litres per second per person, with more for rooms with higher pollutant loads. We calculate it per space.
Can ventilation and air conditioning work together?
Yes, and they should. We coordinate grilles, controls and set points so both systems work efficiently.
Do you install kitchen extraction?
Commercial kitchen canopies are a specialist area. We focus on general supply and extract, toilets and heat recovery, and can advise on kitchen requirements.
