What are split and multi-split systems?
A split air conditioning system has an indoor unit and an outdoor unit joined by refrigerant pipework. A multi-split connects two to five indoor units to one outdoor unit. They are the simplest and most affordable way to cool and heat individual rooms in small offices, shops, salons and surgeries.
Budget roughly £1,450–£2,950 per system ex VAT in the UK. For a typical job — two-room multi-split — expect £3,450–£5,950 plus VAT.
For a single office, treatment room, shop floor or back office, a wall-mounted split is quick to install and cheap to run. Modern inverter units adjust their output continuously, so they hold temperature quietly instead of switching on and off.
Where several rooms need cooling but there is space for only one outdoor unit, a multi-split connects up to around five indoor units to it. The trade-off is that if the outdoor unit stops, every room on it stops — so for critical rooms we usually recommend separate systems.
Where it suits
- Small offices and reception rooms
- Shops and kiosks
- Salons and treatment rooms
- Surgeries and consulting rooms
- Back offices and staff rooms
- Small comms cupboards
What is included
- Survey and unit sizing
- Wall-mounted, floor-standing or under-ceiling indoor units
- Outdoor unit on wall brackets, a flat roof frame or ground mounts
- Pipework in neat trunking or concealed routes
- Condensate drainage
- Commissioning, remote or wired controls and F-gas records
How the work is carried out
Survey
We size the unit to the room and agree indoor and outdoor positions and the pipe route.
Mount the units
Indoor unit on a mounting plate, outdoor unit on brackets or a frame with anti-vibration mounts.
Pipe and wire
Pipework, interconnecting cable and condensate are run and made off neatly.
Test and commission
Pressure test, evacuation, any extra refrigerant charge, then commissioning and handover.
Split systems prices
National guide prices for 2026. Local pages show prices adjusted for each region.

|---|---|---|---|
| Single split 2.5–3.5 kW | £1,450–£2,450 | £1,740–£2,940 | per system |
| Single split 5–7 kW | £1,950–£2,950 | £2,340–£3,540 | per system |
| Multi-split, 2 indoor units | £3,450–£5,950 | £4,140–£7,140 | per system |
| Multi-split, 3–4 indoor units | £4,950–£9,950 | £5,940–£11,940 | per system |
| Extra pipework beyond 5 m | £35–£65 | £42–£78 | per metre |
Ex VAT, supply and install with standard access.
Prices assume a gravity condensate route; condensate pumps add about £95–£195 per unit.
Typical job: two-room multi-split — £3,450–£5,950 plus VAT.
Things to plan for
Refrigerant rules
Since 1 January 2025, new single split systems holding under 3 kg of refrigerant in Great Britain cannot use refrigerant with a GWP of 750 or more — in practice, R32 or lower.
One outdoor unit, many rooms
Multi-splits save wall space but share a single compressor. For server rooms or critical spaces we recommend dedicated systems.
Outdoor unit position
Outdoor units need air flow and access, and should be away from neighbours' windows to keep noise down.
Pipe routes
Shorter, simpler pipe routes are cheaper and more reliable. We plan routes before quoting.
Questions about split systems
How much does a split air conditioning system cost for a business?
A single wall-mounted split typically costs £1,450–£2,950 plus VAT installed. Multi-splits with two to four indoor units are typically £3,450–£9,950 plus VAT.
Single split or multi-split?
Separate singles are more resilient and can be cheaper for two rooms; a multi-split saves outdoor space. We price both where it is close.
Can a split system heat in winter?
Yes. Modern split systems are heat pumps and can heat efficiently down to well below freezing.
Does a small split need F-gas leak checks?
It depends on the refrigerant charge and type. Many small R32 splits fall below the 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent threshold for mandatory leak checks, but they still need installing and servicing by F-gas certified engineers.
How long does it take to fit?
A single split is usually fitted in a day; a multi-split in one to two days.
