What is an air curtain?

An air curtain is a unit mounted above a doorway that blows a controlled stream of air down across the opening. It forms a barrier that reduces heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer while the door stays open, and is widely used in shops, receptions and loading entrances.

Budget roughly £1,450–£4,950 per doorway ex VAT in the UK. For a typical job — single shop entrance, electric or heat pump — expect £1,950–£4,950 plus VAT.

Shops and receptions want their doors open — it brings customers in — but an open door can undo much of the work the heating and cooling is doing. A correctly sized air curtain cuts that loss and keeps the entrance comfortable for staff.

Air curtains can be heated electrically, by hot water, or by a heat pump connected to the air conditioning system, which is often the most efficient option. We size them to the door width and height and the conditions at the entrance.

Things to plan for

Sizing

The curtain should cover the full door width and reach the floor at the right velocity.

Exposure

Windy entrances need more powerful units or a lobby.

Controls

Door contacts stop the unit running when the door is closed.

Heat source

Heat pump air curtains are usually cheaper to run than electric ones.

Questions about air curtains

Do air curtains really work?

Yes, when they are sized and set up correctly for the door and its exposure. They significantly reduce heat exchange through an open door.

Can an air curtain connect to our air conditioning?

Many heat pump air curtains connect to compatible outdoor units, which is often the most efficient heat source.

Are they noisy?

Modern units are quiet at normal speeds. We select units sized so they do not need to run flat out.

Will it keep insects out?

An air curtain can help discourage flying insects, but it is not a substitute for proper insect screening where hygiene rules require it.
