An F-gas leak check is a legally required inspection of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment containing fluorinated gases at or above 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent.

Working in Belfast

Belfast is one of the main commercial centres in County Antrim, with city-centre offices, retail streets, hospitality venues and business parks on its edges.

Postcode districts we cover in Belfast include BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5 and BT6. We also work in nearby Castlereagh, Newtownabbey and Lisburn. The legal duty sits with whoever controls the equipment, so tenants and landlords in Belfast should agree who arranges F-gas leak checks.

What is included

  • Refrigerant type, charge and CO2e calculation for each system
  • Direct and indirect checks to the required method
  • Labels and records updated
  • Leak repair quote if a leak is found
  • Follow-up check within one month of any repair

The visit, step by step

  1. Asset check

We record each system's refrigerant type and charge and calculate its CO2e.

  2. Set the frequency

Each system gets the legal interval for its CO2e and any automatic leak detection.

  3. Check

The engineer checks joints, valves, components and operating data for signs of leakage.

  4. Record

Results are recorded and kept on your F-gas log for at least five years.

What to think about in Belfast

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland follows the EU F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 rather than the GB rules. For HFC systems the leak-check thresholds and intervals are the same; it also requires checks on equipment holding 1 kg or more of certain other fluorinated gases, such as HFO refrigerants.

Roof and height work

Flat roofs, high walls and atriums need the right access equipment and edge protection. We plan towers, MEWPs or scaffold before the job, not on the day.

Certified engineers

Leak checks must be done by an engineer holding the right F-gas certification.

Neighbours and noise

Outdoor units near flats — common above shops — need careful siting so noise at neighbours' windows stays low. We choose positions and quieter units with that in mind.

Typical premises in Belfast

Compliance in Northern Ireland: refrigerant work falls under EU F-gas rules that apply in Northern Ireland, and buildings with more than 12 kW of air conditioning in total need a periodic energy inspection (often called TM44).

How much do F-gas leak checks cost in Belfast?

In Belfast, guide prices are around £135–£225 per visit, first system, plus VAT; a typical job (leak checks on 3–6 systems in one visit) is £255–£795 plus VAT.

Do you also cover Castlereagh, Newtownabbey and Lisburn?

Which systems need F-gas leak checks in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland follows the EU F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573. For HFC systems the thresholds and intervals match the GB rules — checks from 5 tonnes CO2 equivalent, at least every 12, 6 or 3 months depending on size — and equipment holding 1 kg or more of certain other fluorinated gases, such as HFO refrigerants, also needs checks.

What is CO2 equivalent?

The refrigerant charge in kilograms multiplied by its global warming potential (GWP), divided by 1,000. It puts every refrigerant on the same scale.

How often are leak checks needed?

At least every 12 months from 5 tonnes CO2e, every 6 months from 50 tonnes, and every 3 months from 500 tonnes. Where automatic leak detection is fitted, each interval doubles to 24, 12 and 6 months.
